To stand on the wall and gaze into the distance both before you and behind you, leaves you in no doubt that the people who stood behind this massive creation were masters of their craft and masters of their own destiny.
Machu Picchu. The remote mountaintop village of Machu Picchu in Peru never ceases to amaze visitors who take the time to wind their way up crowded mountain pass through overcrowded jungles. Home to an ancient civilisation of remote mountaintop dwellers the village remains a lonely memory of human perseverance and culture.
Petra. This ancient Jordanian city features an amazing array of hand carved buildings hewn into huge rock faces standing alone in the middle of an expansive desert. The a list of the location and the ingenuity of its creators will leave you standing in awe.
Taj Mahal. This famous Indian palace is as romantic as it is awe-inspiring. Built as a token of love to his wife, Shah Jahan left this marvellous structure for countless generations to enjoy for evermore.

The National Mall is an open-area national park in downtown Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. The attorney Memorial is an American memorial shapely to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and was dedicated on May 30, 1922. The architect was Henry Bacon, the sculptor of the main statue (Abraham Lincoln, 1920) was Daniel Chester French, and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin. It is digit of several monuments shapely to honor an American president.
The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress, the assembly of the Federal government of the United States. The dinner meal includes choices of appetizer, entree and dessert as part of a fixed priced meal. Appetizers range from green salad to a delicious corn and crab chowder.  The lemon lavender chicken is a recommended entree choice as are the pork chops or cavatappi pasta.  For dessert, don’t miss the créme brulée.

* The Crystal Palace

Located on Main Street U.S.A. around the corner from Casey’s Corner, The Crystal Palace has one of the best breakfast buffets in Disney.  Make a reservation for this restaurant to share a breakfast buffet experience with the character of Winnie the Pooh.  Dine on fluffy eggs, decadent pastries, fresh fruit, Mickey Ear waffles and amazing omelets.  The characters including Pooh Bear, Eyeore, Piglet, and Tigger will visit each table and pose for pictures while you eat.  The food is outstanding and the atmosphere festive.  Breakfast at The Crystal Palace is a great way to start a Disney day.

* Liberty Tree Tavern

To the left of Cinderella’s Castle is the pathway to Liberty Square.  In the square is the Liberty Tree Tavern, a great lunch spot serving an amazing New England clam chowder.  Visit the Tavern for a hearty lunch of tasty  New England pot roast, a juicy Angus cheeseburger or even a flavorful vegetarian potpie.  The Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake is recommended for dessert.

Epcot

Epcot is divided into two sections, the World Showcase and Future World, both with many great places to eat.  If trying dishes from different countries sounds exciting and delicious, plan several meals in the World Showcase.  There are eleven different countries represented serving sit-down meals, quick-bites and some of the tastiest coffee drinks in Epcot.  Future World offers an equally eclectic collection of food choices from traditional American burgers to pan-seared Ahi tuna.

* Le Cellier Steakhouse (World Showcase:  Canada)

One of the most popular restaurants in Walt Disney World, Le Cellier Steakhouse is one you will need reservations in order to get a table, even for lunch.  The atmosphere is warm and the food is extremely hearty and flavorful.  For an appetizer, start with the rich Canadian cheddar cheese soup.  It is a steakhouse, so a steak is recommended.  Excellent choices include the mushroom Filet Mignon and the coffee-rubbed Kansas City Strip Steak.  However, for the non-meat eater, the sauteed potato gnocchi is outstanding.  For dessert, consider the chocolate “Moose” or the apple-rhubarb crumble.

* The Biergarten Restaurant (World Showcase:  Germany)

A festive, family atmosphere, The Biergarten is an all-you-can-eat German buffet served in the Oktoberfest tradition.  There is a polka band and guests are encouraged to take a twirl on the dance floor in between feasting on the best German food at Disney.  Diners are seated at long tables with other guests so the atmosphere is very friendly.  The buffet includes hot and cold offerings as well as amazing pastries and strudels for dessert.  For beer lovers there are many German and European choices available.  On the buffet, do not miss the sauerbraten, Bavarian cabbage salad, homemade spaetzle, pork roast and baked veal loaf.

* Teppan Edo (World Showcase:  Japan)

Miso soup, sushi and Teppan-Yaki entrees are all served around a flattop grill/table combination and cooked to perfection by your personal chef.  Kids will love the show the table chef gives as he flips shrimp tails behind his back and creates a steaming volcano out of onion slices.  The food is fresh, hot and full of flavor.  The atmosphere is relaxing and suitable for  couples, families or larger parties.

* Coral Reef (Future World:  The Living Seas)

If you are going to eat seafood during a Disney World trip, this is the restaurant to visit.  They offer succulent seafood that is fresh and cooked expertly by top chefs.  For appetizers the creamy lobster soup and the shrimp and lobster cakes are superb.  The blackened catfish served over pepper jack cheese grits is spicy and full of rich flavors but for non-seafood eaters, try the wild mushroom lasagna or the grilled New York Strip Steak.  The almond gelato with passion fruit sauce is a dessert favorite.

* Sunshine Season Food Fair (Future World:  The Land)

Perfect for lunch, the Food Fair offers items from sandwiches and salads to noodle dishes and pork chops.  There is something for everyone and many of the fresh ingredients are grown right there in The Land’s greenhouses.

* Kringla Bakeri og Cafe (World Showcase:  Norway)

Viking coffee, espresso and pastries are all recommended at this small counter service stop.  This is the perfect place to grab a specialty coffee and treat before Epcot’s evening fireworks display.

Disney Hollywood Studios

* Hollywood Brown Derby

The Brown Derby is located on Hollywood Boulevard across from the giant Mickey Sorcerer’s hat.  It serves American food with Hollywood style and is most famous for its Cobb salad.  They are open for lunch and dinner but reservations are recommended.

* Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant

Eating at this restaurant is like dining at an old-fashioned drive-in that only plays snippets of classic Sci-Fi movies.  The table are cars and you dine while the movie clips play.  It is a great place to eat with kids.  The Rueben is outstanding and the hamburgers are always a hit.  Not to be missed is the large and extremely filling ice cream sundae for dessert.  It is located on Commissary Lane.

* Toy Story Pizza Planet Arcade

A replica of Pizza Planet from the Toy Story movie, it is a great place for pizza, salads and fun.  It is located on the Streets of America across from Muppet Vision 3-D.

Animal Kingdom

* Tusker House

This restaurant located in the Africa area of the park is a lunch and dinner buffet.  It features American and African cuisine with dishes like couscous salad, hummus, curry chicken and rotisserie pork loin.  The warm banana pudding is excellent for dessert.

Dining in the Resorts

* California Grill
(Contemporary Resort)

Featuring Californian-Asian fusion cuisine, this amazing restaurant is located on the top floor of the Contemporary Resort with one of the best views of the evening’s fireworks from the Magic Kingdom.

* Boma (Animal Kingdom Lodge)

African and American cuisine served buffet style, Boma is a flavorful bounty of delicious foods.  Make sure to try the FuFu, mashed sweet and white potatoes spiced with cinnamon and coriander.

* Victoria and Albert’s (Grand Floridian)

This is the ultimate in elegant Disney dining.  Victoria and Albert’s is not for a casual family meal or a quick bite before taking in a fireworks display.  This fine dining, Disney style.  Meal choices include Poulet Rouge, Wild Turbot, lamb, duck and Australian “Kobe” beef tenderloin to name but a few.  Reservations are required.

Finding a good place to eat or dine is not difficult when visiting Walt Disney World.  Most restaurants and quick-service eateries are participating members of the Disney Dining plan. The Dining Plan can be included in most vacation packages and can save guests about 40 percent on their vacation dining.

It is strongly recommended for guests to make advanced dining reservations at most Disney table service restaurants, Character dining, Dinner Shows, and Grand Gatherings. Apparently, it’s time to turn the page on the original Seven Wonders of the World …

Since only one of them is left standing, and since most people can’t remember what the rest of them are, anyway, this is a good idea for someone who has too much time on their hands and the ability to raise money.

In this instance, that would narrow the candidates down to one Bernard Weber. He’s a Swiss idealist who is behind the New 7 Wonders Foundation, which he founded in 2000.

Weber’s motivation is simply to call attention to the marvels made possible when mankind applies positive energy. In fact, should his foundation actually generate profits, he intends to use at least a portion of them to rebuild lost marvels. Specifically, he cites the Bamiyan Buddha statue, a cultural masterpiece which dated to the Fifth Century AD and was senselessly destroyed as a blasphemous icon by the Taliban when their stilted act tyrannized Afghanistan.

The original Seven Wonders were so anointed by an ancient geek, Philon of Byzantium, and an ancient Greek, Antipater of Sidon. Those were the days before travel agents and tour guides, so perhaps each felt a need to fill the void. Whatever their inspiration, they were not the first to get the idea.

The concept of such a list was first mentioned by Herodotus in his seminal ‘The History’ in the Fifth Century BC. Later, around the Third Century BC, Callimachus of Cyrene, the top logster at the legendary Museum of Alexandria in ancient Egypt, wrote “A Collection of Wonders around the World.” These lists varied in content, but Philon’s prevailed, due in part to its mention in engravings by the Dutch artist Maerten van Heemskerck (1498-1574) and Johann Fischer von Erlach’s ‘History of Architecture.’

Here are Philon’s seven wonders:

1. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, although some historians believe they were an ancient urban legend and never really existed;

2. The Statue of Zeus, which honored the first Olympic games, was later moved to Constantinople and ultimately destroyed by fire;

3. The Temple of Diana at Ephesus, the largest known building in ancient times which took a century to build and was subsequently senselessly destroyed as a blasphemous icon by Christians when their intolerance tyrannized southern Turkey;

4. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, which stood for 1500 years until the Maltese Knights of St John used its stones to build their own mega-castle nearby;

5. The Colossus of Rhodes, which towered 120 feet high at the city’s harbor entrance until it was destroyed in an earthquake, and which later served as the inspiration for French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi when he created the Statue of Liberty as a gift to the USA;

6. The Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt, whose beacon had a range of 100 miles and which stood for 1500 years before falling victim to an earthquake in the 1300s; and

7. The Pyramids of Egypt, the lone wonder still standing.

Once Weber confirmed there was no official Seven Wonders of the World being sanctioned by any recognized bodies, he established a website, gathered an impressive list of professionals — architects, engineers and the like — and began the process of nominating structures worldwide as potential Wonders. During the subsequent years, visitors to his site answered his call to vote and the nominees were pared to 77.

Recently, these were winnowed to 21 — another multiple of seven, if you hadn’t noticed — with the voting set to continue throughout 2006. The new Seven Wonders will then be announced on New Year’s Day, 2007.

I’ve gone to Weber’s site, perused the finalists and did my cyber-duty by voting. All are truly worthy choices, but I didn’t find it difficult at all to quickly make my decisions:

- The Great Wall of China, where the term ‘breathtaking’ is an understatement;

- The Easter Island Statues, also known as Stone Clones Gone Wild;

- Petra in Jordan, for its mixture of intricacy and magnitude in its status as the world’s most spectacular city carved out of sandstone;

- Stonehenge, a Druidic version of the ultimate perpetual calendar with a timeless design;

- Neuschwanstein Castle in Füssen, Germany, because that’s the way castles are supposed to look;

- The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, because Richard Halliburton said so in one of my favorite childhood tomes, ‘The Book of Marvels,’ and his vivid description therein sold me on it forever; and

- The Hagia Sophia cathedral at Istanbul, because I think at least one Wonder should contain Viking graffiti, and Halfdan did the honors — which are still prominently visible — during his stint with Byzantium’s Varangian Guard.

One interesting twist to Weber’s foundation is that its home is cited as the Heidi Weber Museum in Zurich, which also happens to be a landmark structure designed by the Swiss architect and visual artist Charles Edouard Jeanneret, who became famous under his nom-d’art of Le Corbusier. This building was commissioned by Mrs Weber, to be named after its designer and to house various artworks created by him. It was completed and opened to the public in 1962. However, disputes arose between the two parties, and when Le Corbusier died, the entity which survived him took up the case against the Webers. Among other things, this resulted in a re-christening of the building to its current title and legal squabbling over everything from exclusivity for artwork sales rights to website domain names.

The Heidi Weber Museum is rarely open these days. The irony of its creative legacy and legal history compared to the mission statement of Bernard Weber’s New 7 Foundation is rich. Clearly, universal harmony in the recognition and preservation of famous structures is easier said than done.

Top Ten lists are a dime a dozen on the web and one that crops up more often than most is travel-related lists with outlandish titles such as Top 10 Places You Must See Before You Die and other such morbid titles. This list is similar however we don’t see the necessity to insert the Before You Die bit, although it would be useful to visit these cities before you shuffle off this mortal coil.

When it came to choosing the appropriate criteria for selecting these cities, many statistics and facts were taken into account, before being readily dismissed in favor of the most crucial method of consideration of all … my humble opinion. So forgive me if your own favourite city is not included. I know how you feel as despite my best efforts to sneak one of my own personal favorite cities Dublin into this list, logic dictated that a Top 10 list would look a bit weird if it had 11 cities.

Now the next hurdle to overcome was to decide whether to categorise the cities on a graded basis from 10 down to 1 or take the lazy way and just sort them alphabetically, suffice to say, the lazy way was the landslide winner.

Bangkok

Bangkok is a massive sprawling city that offers charms galore. Bangkok is dotted with historical palaces and temples that offer a glimpse into the city’s ancient history, yet Bangkok offers much more than beautiful temples and glorious palaces. It comfortably nestles at the forefront of Asia’s most visited cities attracting millions of tourists each year. Majestic sites such as The Temple of the Dawn and The Marble Temple should not be missed. Lumphinee Park offers a diversion from Bangkok’s bustling city streets. Bangkok is a modern city that encompasses a bustling nightlife, supreme shopping experiences, delicious aromas that fill up the senses from the many gorgeous restaurants and marketplaces. Bangkok’s wonderful architecture and soothing climate solidifies its deserved place in this list and indeed why it so frequently crops up on similar lists.

Las Vegas

Well it had to be didn’t it? Surely no list of this nature could be complete without Sin City itself, Vegas. Vegas falls into the category of love it or hate it for most people and with visitor numbers increasing each year it seems most people love it. The Entertainment Capital of the World does not disappoint. Where else can you go for a gondola cruise in the morning, see the Grand Canyon in the afternoon and be back in time to see shows such as Siegfried & Roy, Cirque du Soleil and similar headline acts in the afternoon? Ok it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it is a city that has to be seen to be believed. Oh, and did I mention you can also gamble there apparently.

London

Ok the weather is not ideal, and the food can be mediocre but no list of this ilk would be complete without including London. It has attractions and sights for people of all ages and is a cosmopolitan city on a grand scale. Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, London Eye, Tower of London is just a few of the majestic attractions in England’s capital city. If it’s good enough for The Queen well it’s good enough for me, just don’t forget your brolly.

New York City

So good they named it twice as the saying goes and there few cities in the world that offer the amount of iconic landmarks and attractions that New York can. Even leaving aside world famous attractions and sights such as The Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, and Times Square, New York is such a vibrant pulsating city that it has more than enough to tempt visitors going back time after time. It is one of the world’s great shopping cities, has a nightlife second to none and has often been referred to as one of the world’s great cities. You won’t find an argument here.

Paris

I would like to say it was the romantic side in me that welcomes Paris to this list, but it is not, it is because it deservedly nestles here as it as a European heartbeat of culture, beauty and indeed romance and offers some of the most beautiful and majestic sights on the planet. The Eiffel Tower one of the most famous landmarks in the world proudly stands tall in this city that also is graced by Champs Elysees, Notre Dame and The Louvre. The Louvre is home to The Mona Lisa whose ageless beauty bewilders generation after generation. Paris should not be missed.

Rome

This historic city, known as The Eternal City, has some of the most historical sights in the world such as The Pantheon, The Coliseum and The Roman Forum. St Peter’s Basilica is just one of the many glorious churches in Rome, and is an essential visit while in the city. Trevi Fountain is yet another treat in this majestic city. And no it wasn’t built in a day.

San Francisco

The Bay area of California is home to one of America’s most popular destination retreats San Francisco as well as being one of the country’s most liberal cities. The hilly streets are as familiar as perhaps the city’s most famous landmark, The Golden Gate Bridge. The Bay itself sparkles under the warm sun whilst San Francisco is also renowned for its famous cable cars. The twisty streets in Lombard Street are another essential visit whilst harbor tours often include a trip to Alcatraz, the famous, though now inactive, prison. San Fran is a warm wonderful city with a new treasure each time you come, and no, you don’t need to wear flowers in your hair.

Sydney

Beautiful beaches, breathtaking sights and the famous Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge entwined with the beautiful weather and cosmopolitan cuisine make Sydney an unmissable city. The city is a hotbed of activity and one of the friendliest on the planet. Darling Harbour offers enthralling sights and attractions including museums, stunning hotels and shopping whilst The Rocks provides charm in abundance. Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognisable buildings of modern times and is an essential visit. Sydney has it all culture, arts, scenery, climate, and often tops Most liveable city polls. It’s not hard to see why.

Tokyo
