Are you a movie fan that likes to take interesting vacations? Wouldn’t it be fun to take a trip to southern California to see movie filming locations?

California is rich with movie history with many interesting filming spots you can visit. If you have never been to Universal City then this is a good place to start. Here you can go behind the scenes and see sets used repeatedly in the movies. After your tour, visit Universal city walk with dining and shopping.

Nevertheless, everyone visits these major attractions and you and I are serious movie buffs and want something more interesting.

The very best place in the world for movie and western history fans is Gene Autry’s Museum of the American West witch is part of The Autry National Center at 4700 Western Heritage Way off interstate 5 near Griffith Park. Let me tell you folks this Museum has the most amazing things you have ever seen. Some exhibits are from movie history and many of the exhibits are real life. Annie Oakley’s true history and the actual gun she used to make it for example will have you saying, “Hey, this girl was the real deal”.

After the museum since you are already in Griffith Park take the drive up to Griffith Planetarium and see the spot where James Dean made Rebel Without a Cause. Remember the school trip and the climactic shoot-out. The studios filmed many movies here in this huge city park. Remember the scene in The Rocketeer in front of the planetarium when he fights the hoods and flies up to the blimp. Other films featuring the Observatory include the Steve Martin’s Hollywood satire Bowfinger, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, the spoofy 1987 film Dragnet with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd.

If you are adventurous and do not mind lot’s of driving, there are many famous filming locations scattered all over southern California. These are houses, stores and malls like the Puente Hills Mall 1600 Azusa Ave., City of Industry, California where in 1985, Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a plutonium-powered DeLorean “time machine” invented by slightly mad scientist Christopher Lloyd.

Some locations can be found on the internet. Some are no longer there but are born again, like the ruins of a demolished steel plant at Fontana, on the outskirts of San Bernardino Route 10 east of Los Angeles where scenes from the Terminator, and future resistance hero John Connor were filmed, is now the California Speedway. Here you can see where Lindsay Lohan made the movie Herbie Fully Loaded and raced the Volkswagen bug with a mind of its own on this racetrack.Not far away in the Lake Arrowhead area is where Lindsay made her first Movie The Parent Trap. You can drive around the lake ( Lake Gregory not Arrowhead ) and discover many scenes from the movie.

North of Los Angeles on highway 14 is an area called Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park. Hundreds of films and commercials are made in this area since they started making movies, including Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the ‘Vulcan’ planet: Vasquez Rocks has been used in hundreds of Westerns and sci-fi movies. The Flintstones, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, and too many others to name. It is off the beaten path in the middle of the desert but well worth seeing. The entire village of the Flintstones was built here and was open to the public for a while. Just remember that it is a park and after filming is done, the sets are taken away but those crazy rocks are interesting. Take pictures and compare them with movies you see later.

While you are in the area, you must visit The Shambala Preserve for movie and other animals not far away at 6867 Soledad Canyon in Acton. It was started by actress and conservationist Tippi Hedren who is the beautiful blonde in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (And 67 other movies). Mr. Hitchcock said once “Tippi Hedren is really remarkable”. He did not know how right he was even if it was for different reasons. Tippi has devoted much time and effort to charitable causes. Trust me, you will have a great time and be sure to leave Tippi a little donation to help feed those big kitties.

If you plan a trip in October and you do not mind a drive through the desert, you may want to visit The Lone Pine Film Festival. It is held every year in October. This year the dates are October 6th. 7th. & 8th. Taking place in and around the town of Lone Pine California, where filming has continued every year since 1920. Actors and stunt men show up unannounced every year. The area is for sure Hollywood’s favorite movie location for 85 years. Nearly 400 feature films have shot scenes here. It is a huge wilderness area in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. During the festival, they put up hundreds of little stands with movie photographs on them in the exact spot where they filmed the scene. One of my favorites is the big rocks where Richard Boone held Randolph Scott prisoner in The Tall T. This is where John Wayne made many westerns and in fact, his last public appearance was here in the Great Western Savings commercials.

You never know who may show up at this event. Sometimes actors are filming in the area and just show up. I turned to see why my wife was taking pictures and saw Fred Dryer and Hugh O’Bryan standing beside me. You should see the photo she took of Robert Blake. Because it is not overcrowded, it is easy to talk to someone famous. I have stood on a street corner and talked with Gregory Peck and John Mitchum without anyone bothering us. I talked to Robert Blake and saw him and Dale Evans (Yes Dale Evans) sitting at the same table. I don’t think she cared for his language but she didn’t say so. She told us stories about her and Roy making movies in Lone Pine. Blake complained about how awful it was being a child star but he also told some funny stories.

East of Los Angeles near Palm Springs is an old historic western town called Pioneertown. Gene Autry and Roy Rogers built the place to make western movies. The old western-style saloons and storefronts that once were props for movie cowboys were in danger with the brush fires this year but the firefighters saved them. Their still using the town for movies and the last time I checked it was open to the public. It’s in the high desert near Palm Springs.

Since we are near Palm Springs guess what? Even the streets here are named after movie stars. My son and I once sat on a golf course out here asking silly questions to stars as they played golf. I thought it was funny when he asked Don Knots “Who’s Don Knots”?

What do ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and ‘Honeymoon in Vegas’ all have in common?

That last title is a bit of a giveaway, because the answer is that these films were all set in Las Vegas. The city has been something of a hotspot for various movies and television programmes to be set over the years. This is probably why there are several attractions in the city that are firmly focused on this.

The most recent and ongoing success story featuring Las Vegas is ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’. It started way back in 2000, and since then it has built up a dedicated audience – many of whom have no doubt visited the attraction known as ‘CSI – The Experience’.

Situated in the aptly named Studio Walk, this experience allows you to take part in a crime scene investigation of your choosing. Just as it happens every week on the television show, you can identify clues, analyse the evidence and – hopefully – come up with a solution to what happened. It’s a great day out for a fan.

The film ‘Speed’ may not have been set in Las Vegas but that won’t stop you from jumping aboard ‘Speed – The Ride’. This roller coaster has reaches 70mph, so it certainly lives up to its name. Not only do you get to ride it going forwards, you will do it backwards as well. As a result, it is probably best to try this one out before lunch!

I had seen a poster referring to the latest, frightening movie around. It showed a drill entering the mouth of a poor guy sitting in some kind of torture chamber. Just by seeing the scene on the poster it looked really scary and hard to contemplate, would I dare to watch the movie?… The answer was “yes”. Lately, for some reason, I’ve been in the mood of watching scary, bloody, movies. Maybe it’s because lately Hollywood has been in the mood also, just count how many scary movies have been around for the last three years and you will realize they have been more than a few, they have been… a lot.

But coming back to Hostel movie; I decided to go and see how scary this “new scary” movie really was. The theater was not totally full, but there was much more people than I thought, somehow the movie trailers had attracted a good deal of audience. After a scene that seemed taken from a deep hell’s dungeon with a dirty man cleaning the gray floors of the tortures room, the beginning of the movie showed us a group of guys, two American students and a man from Island inside some kind of club in Amsterdam, doing what most tourists do in that famous European port. After a couple of scenes in those clubs, including the leaving behind of the sensual services of a gorgeous blond by one of the American guys, they arrive to their hostel only to realize the door is locked and they would have to wait outside until down to regain access to their room. But after an incident with the neighbors they find help and a roof for their heads that night thanks to the good manners of a strange guy that invites them to his room. Again the scenes of drugs and sex are present all around, I wonder if everything in Amsterdam is really sex and drugs, sincerely I doubt it.

This strange guy has a secret he wants to share with his new friends. If they want to spend a really good time with all the pleasure and excitation women can give they are in the wrong place, they should go East. There is a town in Eastern Europe where beautiful women abound and they are willing to spend their time and senses with you. Obviously he arises the curiosity of these young men and they eagerly ask for directions. He carelessly gives them the address of a very special hostel, the place where they will find all those amenities. Once morning arrives they are on the road, let’s better say, on the rails.

They travel by train as most Europeans do and everything goes fine except for an incident that introduces us to one of the main characters of the film. He is a business man that travels in the same cabin and that happens to be heading to the same location they are going. He is a man that seems to be in his sixties and he shows to the world with a peaceful appearance; though there is something that makes the audience doubt about his intentions. Specially after a shameful incident that forces him to leave the cabin.

Some time afterwards our three adventurous guys have arrived to their destination. It is a typical Eastern Europe small town full of charming old houses and brick streets. As they approach the address they were given by that strange guy back in Amsterdam the expectation of the fun ahead lets them have the best of moods. Now they are inside the Hostel, they are asked for their passports and then they are assigned to their room.

They find the first surprise of the trip once they have entered their room, they gladly realize they will be sharing the room with two beautiful ladies that seem to be perfectly alright standing nude in their presence. All seems to be according their expectations of the so highly recommended town. They spend the night at one of the clubs, go home with the ladies but suddenly, as an army of dark clouds in the sky, everything that seemed so perfect starts to reconfigure into the form of a nightmare.

Oli, the guy from Island, has disappeared without a trace after leaving with one woman they met at the club. Paxton and Josh prefer to think that he left without notice than thinking about something bad happening to him. They try to return to the good times at the club with their girlfriends but things go wrong again. Josh starts feeling sick and leaves the club. He barely makes it to the Hostel where they are waiting for him. Scene by scene we start to realize there something very wrong happening in that town. Specially when the head of Oli appears on screen has a scene coming from a hell dungeon.

Now is Josh’s turn, he will meet with his friend from the train again, Jan Vlasák. But now it won’t be at the club surrounded by pretty ladies. Now he will be his merciless torturer in one of the chambers of that horror land. The movie shows how Vlasák satisfies his instincts and frustrated vocation as a surgeon by cutting Josh’s body at will with the movements and calm of the most sadistic butcher.

Now there is only Paxton left; there was something in the drink he took and he has fallen asleep inside the restroom at the club saving his life for the moment. Everything is confusing, everyone has left; even their girlfriends are gone and no one knows about Josh. He goes to the police but they just take the case nominally, later we would learn they are also a slab in the horror chain of this salvage town.

Walking one of the streets Paxton passes by his ex-girlfriend that looks nothing like the nights before, she is changed and there are no more kisses. He asks her about his friends and after some thought she accedes to take him where they are. They take a taxi and follow a road that takes them to an old factory building that seems to be only ruins. But there is something more than ruins inside, the building is also a home of human misery.

There are men all around, some entering others leaving, always protected by escorts. It is a multimillionaire gathering for the most cruel of the games. Human hunting and torturing as a way of excitation and relax for the powerful. Paxton passes by the chambers where the most despicable acts are being performed; and suddenly he realizes he has fallen in the trap. They have paid $50 grand for him, the price of an American male ready to be hunted.

After losing three fingers and being tortured by a sinister short and bald man. Paxton manages to escape thanks to the inexperience of his torturer. But he would still need to evade all the guards surrounding the installation before he can be free….there are still many horrors ahead for Paxton… I won’t tell you the end…you go and watch it your self….
