The history of London as a permanent settlement stretches back almost two thousand years. The city’s story is a fascinating one, its fortunes inextricably linked to those of the British Isles.
London was founded by the Romans at a convenient crossing of the Thames, though it had been convenient for the local inhabitants too. Tacitus describes a flourishing trading city existing in AD 67. The area was marshy but there was a low hill, roughly where the Bank of England now stands and it was here that the Romans chose to build a typical Roman city, primarily for military reasons.
England at that time was inhabited by a hodge-podge of tribes and small kingdoms, and the Romans had little difficulty subduing them – despite some noble efforts at defense. The locals assimilated Roman culture, and after a couple of hundred years were more Roman than the Romans. When the Romans pulled out, pressured by frontier wars, the Saxons took over. They hated living in the old walled Roman city and established their own city of long huts, roughly where Covent Garden is today.
By the time the Normans took over from the Saxons, the basis of the mercantile capital was already laid through a charter of citizen’s rights and a confederation of tradesmen, providing a counterweight to the aristocracy. London was a leading trading port of Western Europe wherein merchants from Italy, the Netherlands, France and Germany lived around the river it had only one crossing -the Old London Bridge, until 1769.
By the late 16th century, the seeds of England’s future as a world trading power were sown with the formation of the Trading Companies – The East India Company, The Muscovy Company the Levant Company, and the Turkey Company, which along with Britain’s naval prowess, saw management techniques still venerated by world corporations, conquer the world.
The Plague in 1665 and the fire in 1666 shook London out of its contentment but also lead to a wave of property development that saw the forerunners of Sir Richard Rogers dominating the city skylines.
The redevelopment went on into the 18th Century, seeing buildings like The Bank of England and most of the Bridges across the Thames springing up. The Victorians supervised the transformation of London into a modern city, sewers and underground railways tunneled beneath the clay of the world’s capital, while over ground railways and omnibuses opened up across the city, and the port of London enjoyed a final flowering.
Despite the presence of the Royal Palaces, Westminster Abbey (a place of pilgrimage) and the country’s first printing presses, Westminster really only came into its own in the 19th century, and was granted the title of a City, with its own mayor in 1900.
The two World Wars saw huge destruction, to both the populace and the city and some terrible rebuilding followed, with little real conservation work. London’s architectural revival started with the completion of the Lloyd’s building by Sir Richard Rogers in 1979. London is beginning to rival Paris in its Grand Projects.

On my visit to the ancestral estate in Buckingham Shire, England, my distant cousin the Lord of the Manor once remarked to me that he found it fascinating that I lived on the very edge of western civilization. Any further steps and I would be speaking Chinese: we both laughed. But should we have?
In the visits of my relative to America or Canada it was usually then on west to Hong Kong. Here as we all knew those who wanted a silk suit or expensive attire or diamonds, earrings, necklaces of exquisite design could be had at such a bargain as could never be purchased anywhere else in the world.
We all of a certain age had known this, from our richer friends who were off and over, showing off their wardrobe, a new suit or pair of shoes at a time. And we all would marvel. How could the starving merchants of ragged Hong Kong in the midst of abject poverty of China and all Asia all around create all these bargains?
We all shrugged and thought none too much of it: virtual free labor from nearby China, British hands off capitalism being allowed free rein to their talents. And how they thrived.
A small fishing port in a vast deep harbor in 1843 had become British Territory on a ninety nine year lease, a west Pacific base was made ready for the ever moving British Navy, with occasional need to limp to a home port for repairs whether by gunship or typhoon.
And so Hong Kong built up wooden structures of blended Chinese and British designs, under British rule and laws but with full rights for all. And Chinese kept coming into this part of China that was not China and you could get rich.
The brutal occupation by Japan during World War Two caused misery and hardship for all. The end of the war brought back the British and even after the revolution and take over of mainland China by Communism, Hong Kong was wisely left alone.
And this would become one of the most amazing transformations of a mighty nation and it following European theoretic of Communism until it became this was the route to common ruin. China helped hold off the west in Korea but in the decades following great order was in process of change.
As of 1950 and the police action in Korea, America helped Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong build shipyards nearby, and each nation has learned how to be an exporter to America in force.
In harmony, Japan and Korea rebuild in the western model of Greek Democracy, and Hong Kong stayed a colony ruled by London but allowing free British Capitalism. America had forced Japan to embrace both democracy and western capitalism.
Korea and Taiwan embraced both, as have now most every nation in Asia. Democracy more muted, but modified British rules of Adam Smith, adapted through the eyes of America and now seen through the eyes of Asia.
If,as seems possible, this brings us all a little closer to peace and good will and more understanding between people everywhere, is. a good thing.
Buddha and Jesus, so different, shared so much. But mostly, people adorned their highest ruling groups with rare examples of their special status. To have elegance was one thing, but did your mind also sparkle like Aristotle?
And even Aristotle only retired back to his village, and did not go forth with Alexander to spread his words of wisdom to the east. And to tease that famous fast route of a century ago when men could travel around the world in 80 days, we found it fascinating that it is taking so far more than 800,000 days for democracy to not yet become a reality in mighty China.
Although capitalism is doing so well that Chinese are buying back their heritage, and everything that is not nailed down. So if you desire a history book of treasure to China, look in our site while the bids tend ever slightly upward. Imagine a decade from now.

We will be taking a look at just a few of the fountains, how they came about and a bit about the background and the make up of the fountains.
Crown Centre Square Fountain
This is a relatively new fountain in Kansas City and came about in the 1960s. The square now stands on land that was once a derelict site which had a great number of empty warehouses, closed businesses and was an eye sore in the city. The redesign of this part of Kansas City was announced in 1967 and a grand plan to introduce new hotels, office space, retail centres and entertainment was given the go ahead and the Crown Centre Square was born again. To grace the magnificent square the unveiling of what could be considered as the grandest of all the Kansas City Water Fountains in 1972. The fountain compared to many of the traditional style ones has some exceptional and unique properties and one of the most apparent is the absence of any kind of water basin. Taken from the Roman designs the water is gathered in an underground reservoir and the 49 water jets pump the water up into the air to a height of 60 feet. The fountain provides a great deal of fun and entertainment for the children as they enjoy playing between the water fountains and creates a wonderful spectacle for the Crown Centre Square.
Northland Fountain
The claim to fame of the Northland Fountain is it was the first to be built north of the Missouri River which cuts through Kansas City. The Kansas City Water Fountains are often stopped during the winter months but the Northland Fountain is on all year round and provides a magnificent spectacle and when the water freezes it becomes an ice sculpture. The fountain can be found in the Anita Gorman Park and the 80 foot circular base contains a centre consol that can project the water up to 35 feet into the air.
William Volker Memorial Fountain
This was constructed in the honour of William Volker for everything you had given to Kansas City and the citizens of the town. William Volker was an early day retail mogul and he took the opportunity to lay down his roots in Kansas City and he earned his fortune whilst also giving a large proportion of it away. He established some essential parts of the transport system and this included the steamship company and many more for the area and will forever be part of the history. The Kansas City Water Fountains all have a story to tell and non so more than this, to this present day the fountain sits proud with two pools on either side and water jets that send the water up to 28 feet into the sky.
Chris Courtis is proud to write about Water Fountains and other indoor and outdoor water features for the home and office.

Italy is a beautiful country but is one of those countries which you probably have some questions and preconceptions, before your coming to this special country. A place of olive oil, pasta, wine, mafia and sunshine, roman ruins and renaissance palaces, Italy has a lot to give its tourists. Although some of these conceptions are amazing and interesting, it would be a shame if that was the only thing you come away with. Italy is certainly much more complex and stimulating than these concepts.
Italy is a country renowned for its style and love of fashion, nowhere is this truer than in the car industry. The designers of Italy have produced some of the most sumptuously styled cars ever made and with patrons such as Lamborghini and Ferrari this is not surprising. An ideal tour for any car nut is to use a hire car to tour the wealth of museums that Italy has to offer the motoring enthusiast.
Turin is where the majority of the museums are situated, the Museo Dell’ Automobile (Car Museum) is one of the oldest and has an eclectic collection of cars not only from Italy but from all over Europe. With plenty of parking it makes an ideal excursion in a hire car when staying in Turin. Models contained in the collection include Bugattis, Austins, Citroens and Bentleys as well as Italian cars such as Alfa Romeos and Autobianchis.
What would be a tour of car museums in Italy without seeing a Ferrari? Modena is a short and pleasant drive in your hire car and will take to you into the motherland of Ferrari. The Galleria Ferrari is the officially sanctioned museum and allows visitors to get close to cars they have dreamed of since childhood. Not just road cars are exhibited with Scuderia showing off their racing credentials to full effect, enthusiasts will be enthralled by the engines and other parts.
The road cars on display offer a chance to see some of the most famous cars Italy has ever produced. Cars like the legendary 250 GT are in the collection and are the closest the average car enthusiast will get to them considering their extortionate price. Coming through to modern times the F50 and Enzo are also present, although seeing them action is not always possible. The only downside to visiting this museum is facing the realisation that you must climb back into your hire car to drive home.
It is not just Ferrari that makes the car industry in Italy so stylish, when on your hire car holiday be sure to visit the Pininfarina Collection. This design house has designed some of the most gorgeous cars in history and its name is synonymous with grace and fine lines. The company has designed cars for a diverse selection of car manufacturers.
Past clients have included Maseratti, Honda, Cadillac and of course Ferrari. In fact the majority of seminal Ferrari’s have been penned by Pininfarina, the collection and accompanying museum gives and idea how this company has shaped the styling of cars throughout the world.
Your hire car tour however should not purely be limited to car museums however; the towns and villages of Italy are full of culture and history. The coastline is strikingly beautiful and gives bathers the chance to dip onto the warm waters of the Mediterranean.
The fine cuisine of Italy is heralded as some of the finest in the world and includes more than just pasta and spaghetti. Varying much from region to region there is a full array of rice dishes, fine red meats and of course pizza. The penchant for fresh herbs and olives runs throughout the cuisine and complements the wines perfectly.
Touring the vineyards would make up a brilliant hire car trip alone with fine reds and mellow whites it offers the wine enthusiast much. Again regions have their own specialities to suit the local cuisine. Chianti and Asti are two of the most famous varieties of wines in Italy but there is far more to the Italian wine making industry than these two classics.
Touring Italy in a hire car is an ideal trip for those who want to sample the country. Of course car enthusiasts will be attracted by the long tradition of car manufacture and elegant styling, but Italy offers much more than this. As a romantic destination it is unparalleled while those who love the finer things in life will be spoilt for choice by the sumptuous cuisine and wine.
