The Best Bird Watching Destinations from the Riviera Maya

admin | July 3rd, 2010 - 5:15 am

Compared to USA and Hawaii, Mexico has more bird species and it has double the amount of bird species found in Canada. One of the best Bird Watching spots in Mexico is the Yucatan Peninsula. You can find 548 various species which includes 11 endemic varieties; during winter one finds even more species because migratory birds go to the warm region. The Yucatan provides great Bird Watching year round because of its subtropical location. Famous birding sites close to the Riviera Maya are:

• Sian Kaan Reserve
• Cozumel Island
• Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve
• Botanical Garden Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin
• Coba Ruins
• Punta Laguna

You can visit all these bird watching sites in one day tours from the Riviera Maya. The Riviera Maya is a very good birder destination because it enables the visitor to appreciate its tourist infrastructure and comfy hotels while going out on day trips to specific birding sites. One can also opt to stay in non-urban areas with less comfort yet a lot more birds!
Here is a brief introduction to these six Bird Watching Destinations that can be visited from the Mayan Riviera:

Sian Ka’an
Sian Ka’an Biosphere is surely well worth a visit by birdwatchers as 345 species of birds can be found in the site. Because of the excellent diversity of aquatic habitats, marine and wading birds are well available. The species found here represent 33% of all species determined for the whole country of Mexico and 67% of those documented for the Yucatan Peninsula. Two-thirds of its species reproduce within the reserve.

Cozumel Island
Only 5 to 10% of this lovely island has been improved which leaves lots of habitats for exotic bird species. Cozumel -which indicates island of swallows – has subtropical forests, mangroves and dune vegetation. 214 Species of birds have been listed of which 71% are residents and 29% are migratory birds. On the list of most typical species we find: herons and egrets, Magnificent Frigate bird, Black and Turkey Vultures, Osprey, American and Brown Pelican, parrots, fishing eagle, sea swallows and tanagers. Special attention endemic species are the Cozumel Thrasher, the Cozumel Vireo, the Cozumel Wren, the Cozumel Great Curassow, that is extremely endangered and the Cozumel Emerald – a species of hummingbird in the Trochilidae family.

Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve
One of the most considered bird site for bird watching is Rio Lagartos having a total of 72 migratory and 141 resident species. The reserve protects an area covering around 120,000 acres of protected land, made up of mangrove forest, coastal dune vegetation, low deciduous forest, savannas and hummocks. The reserve is well-known for its significant groups of Greater Flamingoes as the area is an essential nesting site for this species. Birding tours are often done by boat although trials are also available.

Botanical Garden Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin
The 150-acre Yaax Che Jardín Botánico del Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín is the biggest botanical garden in Mexico. It can be found in Puerto Morelos. A nature walk goes straight through the mangroves for some excellent birding. There are more than 220 species of birds identified here and there is a tree house in the garden which serves as a lookout for even better bird watching experience.

Coba Ruins
The ruins in Coba is well worth a visit in itself; this is the only Mayan ruins dating back to the Classical period in Quintana Roo. The site has temples, pyramids and structures that are built wide apart with a park having immense dimensions, huge forest which is excellent for bird watching. The site was constructed next to a lagoon and therefore yields habitats for both terrestrial and aquatic bird life.

Punta Laguna
Punta Laguna is a little Mayan village whereby roosters and pigs have the right of way and the smoke from women preparing tortillas over an open fire filters through the thatched roofs of their houses. Together with some 4 other villages, Punta Laguna is part of a 5,000 hectare, government-protected nature reserve known as Ma’ax Yetel Kooh. Along with the distinctive subspecies of spider monkey that inhabits the region, the protected area is also home to howler monkeys, pumas, coatis and a huge diversity of birds.

To be accompanied by a local guide who has been trained to identify birds with their English names is the best way to enjoy your birding and natural history experience. This allows you to check out destinations you never would have discovered on your own.

Caribbean Destinations

admin | July 2nd, 2010 - 5:15 pm

The reason for their move was because there were supposedly better opportunities in terms of career as well as diversity and travel, etc. Over three decades and two children later, my mother now holds dual citizenship in both the United States as well as the island in the Caribbean where she’s from.

While she doesn’t fly back home quite as often as she would like (due to how expensive flights are nowadays), it is still somewhat surprising to see how popular her country as well as other countries in the Caribbean have become to American tourists as well as other international travelers abroad. Because of its beautiful surroundings and miles of untouched natural beauty in the form of pristine beaches and wildlife, the Caribbean is one of the top (if not the top) destinations to vacation in the world. Besides this, recent trends have indicated that many retirees are actually beginning to call the Caribbean ‘home’ as they look for a place that is more conducive to relaxing.

One of the other major appeals of the Caribbean is the weather. Sure, hurricanes may be a problem during certain times of the year, but this is something that no one is exactly ‘immune’ to. Rather, most people tend to focus on the sheer beauty and tranquility that the Caribbean offers, and many young couples who are just married, looking to renew vows or are simply looking to get away to have some time to themselves, look upon the Caribbean as the perfect escape from the busy hustle and bustle lifestyles that so many of us lead. Some of the countries that are prominently featured when thinking of or considering the Caribbean include (but are certainly not limited to) the following: Antigua, Bermuda, Jamaica, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic, etc.

Whether it is your first time traveling overseas or not, prices for flights to any one of the countries in the Caribbean are usually pretty pricey (though this may vary according to the season that you are in). For instance, you may find that the prices for flights to the Caribbean are more expensive during the winter time because this is a prime time during the year when people are looking to escape the cold weather. However, this does not mean that just because the summer time is warm that less people travel to the Caribbean. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Keep in mind that during the summer months, this is still a popular time when most full-time working adults have vacation. Also, it is a time of the year when the vast majority of children have off from school.

In addition to flying, lots of people opt to take cruise ships or vacation cruise liners that depart from various points along the eastern coast of the United States. Typically, a cruise like this will last anywhere from 3 days or more depending on the number of stops that it makes as well as where it is departing from.

Top 10 Tourist-Free Destinations

admin | June 27th, 2010 - 9:15 am

Peaceful, idyllic and free of other holiday-makers, pack your bags – and your travel insurance – for a break like no other.

1. Costa Sudoeste, Portugal

There’s more to Southern Portugal than the Algarve. On the south-west tip there are over 80 miles of the wildest and most spectacular stretches of coastline. Sheer, rocky cliffs are interspersed with secluded coves, while Cabo de Sao Vicente is a nature lover’s paradise. Take your binoculars and watch for otters feeding in the ocean, rare storks’ nests and eagles soaring overhead.

2. Asmara, Eritrea

Thanks to a brief period of Italian occupation, this historic capital city is littered with art deco buildings, modernist masterpieces, colonial villas and continental café culture. Marvel at the futurist Fiat Tagliero building, stroll down Asmara’s picturesque boulevards or hang out with laid back Asmarinos.

3. Cape Wrath, Scotland

Wild, windy and completely unspoilt, with nothing more than deer and sea birds, Cape Wrath marks the most north-west point on the British mainland. You’ve got to be hardy for these parts. Visitors reach the cape via a small ferry and minibus ride across desolate moorland. A lighthouse will be the only welcome sign in this untouched wilderness.

4. Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Once a crucial stop on the Silk Road, Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia. The musk, fine fabrics and jewels are long gone, but the majestic Registan remains – a building to rival the Taj Mahal as one of the finest in the world. The city’s mosque is also an architectural legacy of the city’s medieval might.

5. Kakheti, Georgia

Fine wine and cuisine, coupled with traditional viticulture makes the wine region of Georgia a must. Sip from a clay cup, sing along to folksongs and devour hot, spicy Georgian food. A tour to Kakheti, the main wine-growing region, will allow you to meet the locals and explore 300-year-old cellars. Travel during September and October to participate in the harvest.

6. Jaisalmer, Serai Desert, India

A desert adventure is on the cards at the Serai camp, just outside Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. Set on 30 acres of Great Thar Desert scrub, the only way to reach the camp is by camel, cart or foot along a sand track. Visit the fabled kingdom of Jaisalmer, or take a trip to the Mulana Dunes before sleeping under the stars.

7. New Ireland, Papua New Guinea

This tropical island hideaway lies directly north of Australia. Like its namesake, this Ireland is also an emerald isle, but one cast in an emerald sea. Mysterious and beautiful, New Ireland’s unspoilt beaches and fishing villages can only be reached by plane. But once you’ve landed, it’s easy to fall into Melanesian life. With diving, surfing, fishing and sailing on offer, it’s hard to believe this is one of the least visited countries on earth.

8. Lentiira, Finland

Close to the Russian border, the spruce and pine forests of this wilderness town in north-east Finland are populated by the elusive brown bear. Set up camp in a private hide and observe large brown paws clawing their way through wild mushrooms and toadstools. Swap the wilderness for a lakeside lodge and unwind with a traditional Finnish sauna.

9. Butrint National Park, Albania

Close to the Albanian port of Saranda, Butrint’s dramatic cliffs, caves and harbours make it well worth the visit. The Park’s surrounding lake region is a sanctuary for rare species such as the loggerhead sea turtle. It also contains the ancient city of Butrint, a World Heritage Site and one of the least known truly visit-worthy locations in the Mediterranean.

10. Ardennes, France

One of the most under-explored and over-looked regions of France – drive through the mountainous Ardennes in the north-west to discover idyllic riverside villages and secluded lakeside beaches. After you’ve soaked up the dramatic scenery of the Meuse and Semoy Valleys take a boat out and learn to fish, or cycle through the beautiful French countryside.

Great North American Travel Destinations in June

admin | June 21st, 2010 - 1:15 pm

The United States of America is home to some of the most spectacular views in the world. From the snowy mountaintops of the Sierra Nevada’s in eastern California to the subtropical swamplands of the everglades in southern Florida, we have access to just about every variation of ecosystem imaginable. With so many cheap hotels and cheap airline tickets within our reach, it’s definitely something to take advantage of. Being just after spring, when the weather is nice and the vegetation is in full bloom, June is the perfect time of year to plan a getaway. There are many destinations that are exceptionally beautiful during the early summer month of June.

Flagstaff, Arizona sits in the mountains at an elevation of 6,910 ft. Known for its crisp, refreshing mountain air; Flagstaff is extraordinarily beautiful during the summer time, with average temperatures in the 70s to 80s. One of the best things about Flagstaff is its breathtaking view of the San Francisco Peaks, sitting about 7 miles north. If you decide to visit this adorable town, be sure to visit its historical downtown, not to mention the many surrounding sites and book early. Looking for advanced travel to Flagstaff can score you some cheap flights and killer hotel deals. Sedona is a short drive down the switchbacks, and home to some amazing red rock country. If you are a hiker, this is your place. Even better than Sedona, with 5 million visitors from all over the world just between the months of May and October, the nearby Grand Canyon is a must see. Flagstaff, being a mere 90 minutes to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, gives the perfect opportunity to visit astonishing canyon created by the powerful Colorado River.

With an unbelievable 1,960 miles of shoreline, Lake Powell is the aftermath of the Glen Canyon Damn on the Colorado River. Filled with awe-inspiring canyons and deep blue water, Lake Powell is best visited by boat, where you have access to all of the amazing sites it has to offer. Lake Powell is home to some jaw-dropping views that words cannot due justice. With its colorful canyon walls and oddly shaped rocks, it looks as if it’s not from this world. If you enjoy water sports and exploring without limits, you would find yourself in paradise here. Lake Powell is truly a site like no other.

Only a state away, tucked away in the Sierra Nevada’s where California and Nevada meet, sits Lake Tahoe at an elevation of 6,237 ft. While it may snow through the winter, Lake Tahoe’s temperatures are optimal during the month of June, staying in the 70s. The beautiful green, forest covered land has many activities to offer including hiking, boating, swimming and, of course, fishing on the gorgeous lake that is home to many different varieties of Trout.

However, if you prefer the city, Los Angeles is one of the best. Placed on the Pacific Coastline, L.A. is a magnificent city to visit. It is surrounded by numerous surf-influenced beach towns, including Long Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. If you don’t mind a two-hour drive, Big Bear Mountain is a great spot to enjoy many recreational activities. California has it all. Its one of the only states where you can visit the warm, sandy beaches and snow covered mountain tops in the same day.

Though there are many more beautiful places in the western region of our country, the east has a lot to offer as well. Florida’s panhandle, known as the Emerald Coast for its emerald green waters, doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. We all know South Florida is a great site to see, being home to the Florida Keys and Everglades, but not too many speak of the northwestern region of the state. This could be what is keeping it from becoming over populated like the south, if that’s the case; maybe less recognition is a good thing. Navarre beach says it best, “Florida’s best kept secret.” The Florida panhandle is home to sandy, white beaches unlike any others in the states. The combination of the brilliant emerald green ocean and snow white, soft sand makes this spot a choice place for vacationing.

Our Country is big. These are only a few prime examples of places that are beautiful vacation destinations during early summer time. There’s discount airfare available for every place imaginable. So decide which spot is for you and start searching for some cheap flights! They always say “live life to the fullest,” and what better way than visiting all the breathtaking places this country has to offer.
